Just keep weeding
I was too tired to work on Tuesday. At first, I thought I’d got the dreaded coronavirus. But no, I think I was just exhausted. So I signed off on Slack and headed to the garden to do some weeding.
I find it hard to know how to spend my time at the best of times, let alone in the middle of a pandemic. What’s important at a time like this? Working on an ambitious personal project? Devoting all of one’s resources to helping one’s community?
I’ve no idea. But clearing all the weeds from an area of our garden felt like the right thing to do. It’s meditative. Slow. There’s a clear end goal – a weed-free patch of land. You can finish it. As the world spirals out of control, it was something I could manage.
Maybe that’s the best thing we can do right now. Look after the small patch of land that we can see. Check in on our neighbours. Keep tabs on friends. Stay local.
This pandemic is going to be around for a while so it’s important to pace yourself. Checking the news every half hour is exhausting. It’s good to know what’s going on but you can keep on top of that with a ten-minute news check, once a day.
You might find it helpful to contribute financially to charities that will be working extra-hard right now. As well as our regular donation to the Trussell Trust, this month we’ve given money to Beauty Banks, Compliments of the House and Feeding Britain.
Or you might just want to keep weeding. At a time like this, it’s not a bad idea.
